12 - There will be a demonstration organized by Austrian Social Forum and
Greenpeace. There will be a representation of women taking part, dressed in
black or at least very dark colours. The demonstration begins at the
American Embassy at 1.30 P.M. and will walk to the Landesgericht (Court House)
where there will be a "die-in" -- we are now
deliberating whether the women will take a walk along a main road leading
to the Embassy in order to draw some attention. (The Embassy is a bit off
the beaten path.)

in Denmark, Copenhagen, will have a vigil - Friday the 11th of April at Gammeltorv
16.30-17.00 and Saturday the 12th of April in front of the American Embassy,
Dag Hammerskjölds Allé 24 from 12.00 we will be part of a big
anti war demonstration. Dressed in black with our banners and leaflets.

to war refugees be given by our government. Many women's organisations are
expected to participate in this action.

county courthouse steps and remain there for an additional 15 minute vigil.
During the fifteen minute vigil drums will continue to sound the sorrow and
agony experienced by all who are victims of the war in Iraq.

WAILING
WOMEN WORLDWIDE EXPRESS SOLIDARITY WITH IRAQIS AND DECRY THE WAR
On Friday, April
11th and Saturday, April 12th there will be a wave of women's peace actions
that will sweep across the planet.
In Lismore, there
will be a Wailing Vigil meeting at Spinks Park on April 12th at 10AM. Women
are invited to come dressed in black with mourning masks, empty prams, photos
of Iraqis and ready to wail.
"There is
a long tradition of women wailing for peace," say organisers Ruth Rosenhek
of the Rainforest Information Centre and Lisa Corkill from Women of Peace
(WOoPE). Our "foremothers" wailed and wept in times of desperation
and despair.
"Under today's
political and social climate, the wailing women of the Bible and times past
are needed to bring our communities together today. These women possessed
the strength and the courage to persevere, to encourage and to remain steadfast
in their faith and hope for the future.
"In Baghdad,
it has been reported that one can hear the sound of women wailing in the night
for another lost son or daughter, husband, friend or lover.
"We oppose
the war on Iraq and wish to clearly express our solidarity with our brothers
and sisters who are now suffering from the violence of an unjust war.
"We've networked
this event worldwide and expect a wave to sweep across the planet of Women
in Black silent vigils and Wailing Women actions."

Women’s Peace Action Puts Lismore On The Map
On Friday, April
11th and Saturday, April 12th, women will take to the streets in black dresses
for silent and wailing vigils in different cities across the world.
“We got
the idea after helping to organise the global candlelight peace vigils a few
weeks ago.” says Ruth Rosenhek of Women of Peace and the Rainforest Information
Centre in Lismore.
“We’ve
invited women all across the globe to participate in peace vigils to express
solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Iraq.”
Ruth and various
others have been spending hours on the computer sending out emails to women’s
groups worldwide. So far, there are over 40 actions scheduled in 13 countries
including Greece, Spain, Ireland and Japan. Many of the actions will be wailing
women actions.
“This is
an action where women dress in black dresses and walk through the streets
crying out.” says Rosenhek. “There is nothing violent about this
action and yet some women have written that they are afraid of being hauled
away by the police. I was not surprised to hear this from a woman in Belgrade
but I was dismayed to hear it from a number of women living in the United
States.
“Yesterday,
we heard news that at a protest this week in Oakland, California, police officers
fired sting balls containing rubber pellets in the air and spool-sized wooden
projectiles and small bean bags directly at individuals.
“The war
on Iraq has been a wake-up call to all of us that the freedom we take for
granted is revokable at the whim of the government. We need to stand together
and speak out for freedom for all peoples.”
The Lismore Wailing
Women Vigil will be held on Saturday, April 12th beginning at 10AM at Spinks
park. Women are invited to bring empty prams, photos of Iraqi women and children
and to wear black dresses.
