We live in a time of environmental and social upheaval. Our way of life is destroying our planet and its diverse lifeforms. These are times of confusion and uncertainty, and . . . . . .

of remarkable opportunity.

This weekend workshop will inspire and empower us. It will offer experiential deep ecology processes to bring alive the epic story of our evolution.

The Timeline of Light is the story of our Universe; it is our very own creation myth. It is a new deep time workshop which grounds us in the reality of our evolutionary journey. In a bush setting in the ACT, this workshop will enable us to revive our ancient connection with the living Earth.

We will identify with our ecological - rather than our socially conditioned - selves.

We will reach back to the primal flux from which we arose. We will enter the ‘cosmic walk’ and move from the Cambrian explosion to the present, connecting with all the webs of living systems that have ever existed. We will journey seven generations into the future and meet those unborn beings whose lives we - in this life time - can profoundly affect.

We will gain new understandings of our place in the vast unfolding story of life in our universe.

This will open us to the energy and vision to transcend the momentum of the story on which the institutions of modern society are based and enable us to forge a new relationship with the living Earth.

The Timeline of Light brings together science, poetry, spirit and ecology. During our weekend together, we will experience: deep ecology presentations, guided visualisation, meditation, sharing and expressing feelings, dance, music, movement, symbolic process and celebration. We will invite sacred space, invoke the spirit of plants and animals and call upon our ancestors, human and pre-human, to lend us their support.

Connecting with the ‘epic of evolution’ in this powerful and sacred way helps to unite and support us, and offers us hope and vision. We are empowered to work in the community for peace, justice and the healing of our Earth.

The Facilitators

John Seed and Ruth Rosenhek are global rainforest activists who facilitate deep ecology workshops around the world. They have offered the Timeline of Light in the US, at Findhorn in Scotland and in Australia. John is the founder and a director of the Rainforest Information Centre and co-author of ‘Thinking Like A Mountain’. Ruth is an organisational consultant, eco-philosopher, social change activist and performance artist. The facilitators direct all workshop fees to the healing of our planet, in particular to rainforest and Indigenous peoples’ projects in the third world. This workshop will assist the Panacocha Project in Equador.

Background to the Timeline of Light

The Timeline of Light has been created by John Seed & Ruth Rosenhek, with John Fowler. It builds on processes earlier developed by Ruth & the two Johns, and draws on work by Maria Montessori & Sister Miriam Terese McGillis.

This workshop will also benefit from the creative input of the Canberra organisers and special contributions by other local people.

Location

Camp Cottermouth offers indoors and outdoors facilities in a natural setting just 26 km from Canberra City. It adjoins the Murrumbidgee Corridor and overlooks the junction of the Murrumbidgee and Cotter Rivers. Travelling from Canberra, it is on the left (1435 Cotter Road), 7.1km past the Mt Stromlo Observatory turn off. Lifts can be arranged.

Accommodation

The camp offers bunk accommodation in quite large dormitories. These facilities are basic but adequate. There is ample space for camping, for those who would prefer to bring tents. We hope to sleep under the stars for at least one night (weather permitting), so come equipped with your sleeping bag and mat.

Food

Simple vegetarian meals will be provided, starting with supper on Friday night.

Fees

Fees have been kept low so that the workshop is as accessible as possible. Participants may be asked to assist with cleaning & kitchen rosters. As all proceeds will go to healing the Earth, those who can afford it are invited to pay above the nominated amounts. Those with very low or no incomes are invited to apply for scholarships or work exchanges. Please see below for fee structure.

Timing

Registrations will begin from 5pm on Friday 3 Dec. Dinner will be served at 7pm & the first workshop session will commence at 8pm. Finishing time will be 5pm on Sunday 5 Dec.

Children

Children are welcome, however there is no organised child care. Older children are invited to participate in the workshop. Parents of younger children are invited to bring another adult as a carer. This should be cleared first with the organisers. If enough parents wish to do this, it may be possible to arrange this cooperatively. The organisers are happy to mediate this. The cost for non-workshop attending adults is $50. There is no fee for children under five.
