Reclaiming Deep Ecology in 21st Century Ireland
Summer Solstice Deep Ecology workshop
Near Dublin, Ireland, June 22-24 2001
John Seed, Anne Kenny, Dolores Whelan
Brigid, Brendan and the whale.
There is a story in which St Brendan is surprised when a whale who is in trouble calls out for help to Brigid even though he is standing nearby . Brendan later asks Brigid why she thinks this happens . In the course of their conversation it emerges that Brigid is always consciously aware of the presence of the Divine in the world and know that her power emenates from this awareness.
Deep Ecology emerges from an understanding of Human Beings consciously knowing themselves as apart of the Natural World. Spirituality is one of the the four aspects of Deep Ecology Work. In this workshop, we will revisit the rich spiritual tradition of this country, hear again the stories, and myths which suggest that we were once a deeply ecological people. From the Megalithic to the Celtic to the Celtic Christian, from Bru na Boinne to Kildare, ancestoral traces exist of a people who knew and held their place within creation, people who lived in a spirit of relatedness and interconnectedness with the earth and all its beings.
This remembering will be the context in which John Seed will act as catalyst allowing us to explore further the question which emerged at John workshop in Tullow last year "do you know who you are as a people "?
John will use his considerable expertise in facilitating this remembering working with ideas , songs stories and rituals ( Deep Time medicine Harvesting the gifts of the ancestors , telling the Universe story , truth Mandala etc ) This deep and rich work will empower each of us to feel and move past the despair about the present ecological crisis and sustain us to respond, each in our own way, on behalf of all life on this planet.
