EARTH SPIRIT ACTION
Earth: The spiritual blight of separation -- from each other and the Earth -- plagues modern humanity and is the underlying root of the ecological crisis or our times; the culturally-conditioned, competitive, isolated self is the engine of the 6th extinction spasm currently unfolding around us. Arne Naess, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of Oslo University who coined the term "deep ecology", said that "ecological ideas are not enough"; we need "ecological identity, ecological self". Naess says that this is to be brought about through community therapies, "healing our relations to a widest community, that of all living beings". In this workshop, we participate in a series of ceremonies and rituals synchronous with those used by indigenous peoples throughout time. Through creative exercises, despairwork and meditations, we acknowledge our interconnectedness with air, water and soil as we invite the spontaneous healing of psyche and dissolve the illusion of our disconnection from the living Earth.
Spirit: Spiritual connection with the living Earth empowers and sustains creative and joyous action. Through meditation, breath and dialogue we explore the question: How do we engage in social or ecological change work from a place of heart and spirit? Together we grapple with issues of effectiveness, burn-out, and conflict as well as the fear and apathy that permeate our society. Participants are encouraged to develop a spiritual framework as we explore these issues through the lens of deep ecology, eco-psychology, buddhism and other spiritual traditions.
Action: John, Ruth and many of the participants in these workshops have been ecological and/or social justice activists for decades. Through films, song and poetry we share our stories, the challenges and the joys.Australian author, musician and film-maker John Seed is a longtime rainforest activist and, with Joanna Macy, creator of The Council of All Beings www.rainforestinfo.org.au/deep-eco/johnseed.htm
Ruth Rosenhek conducts environmental and social justice campaigns, facilitates experiential deep ecology workshops, teaches on spiritual engagement and is active in the Dharma Gaia Trust. http://www.rainforestinfo.org.au/deep-eco/rosenhek.htm

WILD EARTH, WILD HEART, WILD MIIND: A JOURNEY IN ECO-PSYCHOLOGY
Human personality exists at the intersection of the ancient cycles of air and water and soil. Without these there IS no self and any attempt to heal, or enlighten the personality that doesn't acknowledge this fundamental fact is doomed to failure. There can be no separation between ourselves and Nature. ?
To acknowledge our interconnectedness with air and water and soil, indeed our IDENTITY with them, is to invite the spontaneous healing
of psyche. It is from these elements that psyche too is woven.Using personal sharing, experiential deep ecology and creative exercises, we will excavate the obstructions between person and
planet. Vision and empowerment arise naturally from realigning ourselves with the Earth.
ECOLOGY, IDENTITY & EVOLUTION
As Arne Naess says, It is not enough to have ecological Ideas, we need ecological Identity. It is not from a sense of responsibility or guilt that we will make it through what Joanna Macy calls the Great Turning: rather it will take an underlying shift in values and belief, a transformation of consciousness in which "The Environment" is deeply experienced as us, our very Selves. This course is an overview to deep ecology and the broadening of the "Self" through feelings, deep time work, the Council of All Beings, and other deep ecology rituals and ceremonies.
THE TIMELINE OF LIGHT is the story of our Universe; it is our very own creation myth. This epic has the power to unite us, to offer us hope and vision. Through experiential deep ecology processes, guided visualisation, meditation, spoken word and movement, we will:
- Recapitulate 15 billion years of continuous existence through the Cosmic Dance
- Re-experience our ancient journey from sea to land and upright and then meet the unborn beings of seven generations in the future.
- Delve into the thinking of Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme through ancient rocks and video.
- Chant and celebrate, spin with the planets around our sun and gaze towards the constellation Sagittarius where lies the Milky Ways hub around which our solar system revolves every 200 million years.
